What you are not changing, you are choosing. Wow. Let that sink in for a moment.
That thing you keep complaining about, but you don’t address? You are allowing it to persist.
Blaming someone else for a condition in your life? You are choosing to remain a victim in that situation.
Ouch. I get it. It’s a harsh reality, but it is a reality, nonetheless.
Let’s look at two common examples of this truth in action.
Your Weight: Complaining About It But Not Choosing to Lose It
Do you complain about your weight and, although you continually express a desire to lose it (or call yourself fat, lazy, or any other number of unhealthy labels), you struggle to actually take a meaningful step toward achieving that goal? Why?
Because unhealthy eating combined with a sedentary lifestyle may be a deeply ingrained personal habit. Food may be a coping mechanism for stressors in your life. You might be using your weight as a shield to avoid certain situations or responsibilities. Your low self-esteem or feelings of unworthiness may lead you to believe that you can’t be successful or aren’t worth the effort. The reasons are many and unique to you, but the bottom line is this:
Until you reach your tipping point – that is, the moment when the scale tips in favor of change – and your motivation to transform becomes stronger than the comfort of remaining in your current state, you will not choose change.
Read that last sentence again! It can be broadly applied to situations in which you are resisting change. Conversely, when the discomfort becomes greater than the comfort, you will choose change. Do you want to embrace more discomfort in your life? Or welcome a change in your life?
Staying in a Job You Hate: Complacency in Discomfort
You likely know someone or might even be someone who constantly complains about their job. Yet you return, day after day, to a work environment that you hate. Why stay in a job that doesn’t fulfill you?
A primary reason for many people is fear of the unknown. Some may fear the loss of financial stability. Some believe they can’t possibly find a better job. Some stay due to external reasons such as societal or familial expectations or pressure. Some even believe that ‘work’ cannot equal joy!
As with anything, shifting from complaining about it to taking action toward a more fulfilling solution requires courage, self-awareness, and the willingness to step outside of your comfort zone with confidence, commitment, and self-compassion.
As Lao Tzu said:
“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.”
With that in mind, what steps will you take today to chart a more purposeful course for your future? (And while we’re on the subject, do note that when one area of your life isn’t harmonious, it potentially creates unintended negative consequences in other areas of your life as well.)
Decisions: Embracing Courage over Procrastination
In our journey through life, we encounter pivotal crossroads that beckon us to make crucial decisions. Surprisingly, though, many of us find ourselves hesitating to make changes we know are for our highest and best. Fear of the unknown, attachment to familiar routines, and doubts about our capabilities hold us back from taking that leap of faith. However, the moment we embrace change – even if that change results in a major life transition – we unlock a world full of possibilities.
Change allows us to shed the weight of stagnation, invite personal growth, and discover uncharted horizons.
It empowers us to let go of limiting beliefs, enabling us to sculpt a future that aligns with our truest desires.
Embracing change is not always easy, but the rewards it brings are immeasurable.
As we venture towards the path of transformation, we redefine our lives and embrace the boundless potential that lies within us.
“Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become.” – Unknown
