We all have dreams and desires. Goals we want to reach, a life we can picture, a version of ourselves we’re moving toward. The question isn’t whether we want those things — it’s how we actually get there.
A lot of us have been sold the idea that the answer is hustle. Stay busy. Keep moving. If you’re not doing something every minute of the day, you’re falling behind. And I understand the appeal of that thinking — it feels responsible, it feels productive, it feels like you’re taking your life seriously. It feels like you are focused and disciplined.
But here’s what I’ve come to know: frenetic energy is not your friend. And it’s definitely not the path to what you actually want.
It’s that state you’re in when you’re moving from one thing to the next, trying to keep up. It’s fast. It’s active. And on the surface, it can look like productivity.
But when you’re in it, you’re not really present in anything you’re doing.
You’re reacting more than choosing and sure, you’re getting things ‘done’,,,but you aren’t really experiencing them.
Think about it this way. We tend to over-schedule ourselves — and our kids — to the point where the goal stops being the experience and becomes simply staying on schedule. The intention behind the activity gets completely lost.
Here’s a simple example. You’re getting ready to go to a party. In one version of this story, you’ve given yourself plenty of time. You’re enjoying the process, you feel good, you leave the house feeling like yourself. In the other version, you’re rushing. You’re stressed. You’re throwing things together, you forget the hostess gift, and you arrive feeling frazzled before the evening has even started. Same event. Completely different experience — and it all came down to what frenetic energy running the show.
Who wants to go through life like that? Certainly not me.
So, let’s talk about what the alternative actually looks like — because a calm presence is not the same thing as doing less or moving slowly or somehow opting out of a full life.
A calm presence is a grounded state of awareness. It’s intentional and thoughtful. It considers what’s actually happening instead of just reacting to it. It’s the difference between moving through your day on autopilot and actually being there for it. When you’re operating from a calm presence, you’re observing, you’re making conscious choices, you’re connected to what you’re doing and why. And that connection — to yourself, to your intentions, to what genuinely matters to you — is exactly what allows you to move toward your desires without losing yourself or the richness of your life in the process.
Frenetic energy creates separation. A calm presence creates wholeness.
And the good news is, this is something you can actually cultivate. It’s not a personality trait you either have or don’t. It’s a practice — and like any practice, it gets easier the more you do it.
Here are five ways to start bringing more calm presence into your daily life:
- Set your intentions in the morning before the day sets them for you. Take a few minutes before you jump into your day to decide what actually matters. Not everything on your list — what’s genuinely important. To you. And remind yourself how those things connect to what you want. When you know why something matters, you show up to it differently.
- Find grounding techniques that work for you and actually use them. Breathing exercises, a short meditation, a walk outside — whatever brings you back to yourself. The key is having something you can reach for when you feel frenetic energy starting to take over, rather than just white-knuckling your way through the day.
- Build in small pauses to check in with yourself. You don’t need an hour. A few minutes here and there to recalibrate — to notice how you’re feeling, where your energy is, whether you’re still moving in a direction that feels right — can make a significant difference in how your day unfolds.
- Practice mindfulness throughout your day, not just during dedicated “mindfulness time.” Notice your thoughts. Notice your reactions. Notice when you’ve slipped into autopilot. Awareness is the first step to everything — you can’t change what you can’t see.
- Be intentional about your environment and the people in it. The energy around you matters. Surround yourself with people, places, and things that support the version of yourself you’re working toward — not ones that pull you back into chaos.
Here’s what it really comes down to: achieving what you want isn’t about being the busiest person in the room. It’s about being the most present one.
When you’re grounded and aware, you think more clearly, you make better decisions, and you stay connected to what actually matters to you. Things that once felt hard start to have a little more ease to them — not because life got simpler, but because you got clearer.
It’s not about urgency. It’s about intention. It’s not about striving harder — it’s about showing up more fully to the life you’re already living while you build the one you want.
