About Modern Consciousness®

A practical philosophy for understanding yourself, thinking more intentionally, and creating a life that reflects what genuinely matters to you.

Most of Us Were Never Taught to Examine How We Think.

Every one of us experiences life through a unique lens.

That lens has been shaped over time by our experiences, relationships, beliefs, assumptions, values, culture, conditioning, and the meaning we’ve made of what has happened in our lives.

Most of the time, we don’t consciously examine that lens.

We simply look through it.

And from there, we interpret what happens, make decisions, respond to challenges, form relationships, set priorities, and determine what is possible for our lives.

Modern Consciousness® invites us to become more aware of that process.

It is a practical philosophy and approach to human development built around a simple idea: the more clearly we understand ourselves and the thinking shaping our experience, the more intentionally we can participate in the lives we are creating.

The goal isn’t to tell you what to believe, what to value, or what your life should look like.

It’s to help you develop the awareness, discernment, and human capabilities to determine those things for yourself.

That distinction is fundamental to Modern Consciousness®.

WE TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO THINK, NOT WHAT TO THINK.

Beyond Solving Problems

People often seek personal development because something isn’t working, something needs to change, or there’s an outcome they want to achieve.

Those are valuable reasons to begin. But Modern Consciousness® isn’t built only around solving problems or creating change.

It is built around developing human capability.

We can strengthen our capacity to observe more clearly, question more thoughtfully, examine our assumptions, consider different perspectives, exercise discernment, make increasingly thoughtful decisions, and lead ourselves more intentionally.

Those capabilities matter when we’re facing a difficult problem. They also matter when life is going well.

Rather than beginning with an assumption about what needs to change, Modern Consciousness® begins with curiosity about what is actually happening.

What are we assuming? What are we reacting to? What matters here? What might we not be seeing? What is influencing the choices we’re making?

That inquiry creates space between our immediate interpretation and what we choose to do next.

The questions may guide the exploration. The answers remain yours.

The Capabilities We Develop

Modern Consciousness® is built around four interconnected human capabilities. Together, they strengthen our ability to understand ourselves and our experience, navigate complexity, make thoughtful choices, and participate more intentionally in the lives we are creating.

Understanding

How do I see more clearly?

Develop the capacity to observe before reaching conclusions, question assumptions and interpretations, recognize patterns and influences, consider different perspectives, and remain curious about what you may not yet understand.

Self-Leadership

How do I lead myself well?

Strengthen your ability to regulate your responses, exercise discernment rather than simply borrow someone else’s answers, make thoughtful decisions, take responsibility for your choices, and act with greater personal agency.

Intentional Living

How do I live in greater alignment with what genuinely matters to me?

Become more conscious of what you value and how your everyday choices are shaping your life, so that habit, conditioning, circumstance, or expectation don’t automatically determine its direction.

Systems Thinking

How do I see the bigger picture?

Develop the ability to recognize relationships, patterns, consequences, and interdependencies, including how one decision or area of life can influence another and how our choices can ripple beyond ourselves.

These aren’t skills we master once. They are capabilities we continue to develop and return to throughout our lives.

BETTER QUESTIONS BROADEN PERSPECTIVES.
BROADER PERSPECTIVES CREATE BETTER POSSIBILITIES.

Why This Matters

The way we think shapes far more than our private experience of life.

It influences how we communicate, make decisions, navigate disagreement, respond to uncertainty, lead, work, parent, partner, and participate in our communities.

And those individual choices don’t exist in isolation.

They ripple outward into our relationships, families, organizations, communities, and the larger systems we’re part of.

Modern Consciousness® begins with the individual because our capacity to contribute meaningfully to the world around us is influenced by the capabilities we develop within ourselves.

Greater self-awareness can change how we respond.

Greater discernment can change how we decide.

Broader perspective can change how we understand one another.

Stronger self-leadership can change how we participate.

The aim isn’t perfection or agreement.

It’s increasing our capacity to meet the complexity of life with greater awareness, clarity, discernment, and intention.

Created by Stacie Shifflett

Modern Consciousness® was created by author and entrepreneur Stacie Shifflett after decades of building businesses, leading teams, navigating significant life transitions, and seeking to understand a question that followed her across seemingly different experiences:

Why do people think, choose, respond, and experience life as they do?

Over time, Stacie began recognizing recurring patterns in the way she approached challenges, decisions, relationships, change, and life itself. What began as personal inquiry gradually developed into a larger body of thought about how we understand ourselves, examine the thinking shaping our experience, and strengthen our capacity to participate more consciously in our lives.

Today, that work continues to evolve through Modern Consciousness® and its growing body of principles, distinctions, frameworks, methodologies, and practical tools.

YOU MAY HAVE SEEN ME ON

From Philosophy to Practice

Modern Consciousness® is designed to be more than a collection of ideas. Its principles are translated into practical frameworks, questions, and tools that help people apply the philosophy to their own lives.

The approach is intentionally inquiry-based rather than prescriptive. Instead of providing someone else’s answers, the work helps you examine your own experience more clearly, recognize what may be influencing it, consider perspectives you may not have considered, and determine what genuinely matters to you.

The questions guide the process. The thinking remains yours.

At the heart of the practical work is a developmental process that begins with understanding where you are and identifying what is most meaningful to you. From there, you make thoughtful choices, take action, and continue to assess whether the life you are creating reflects what matters to you and is moving you toward the outcomes you desire.

A Practice You Can Return To

Modern Consciousness® can help you work through a specific challenge, decision, transition, or outcome you’re trying to create. But its value isn’t limited to solving the issue that brought you to the work.

Through the process, you are also developing human capabilities you can continue to strengthen and apply throughout your life.

The questions, frameworks, and tools provide a reusable way to put those capabilities into practice. You can return to them as your circumstances change, new decisions arise, opportunities emerge, or you simply want to examine an area of your life more thoughtfully.

You don’t need to wait until something is wrong.

You can draw on the same capabilities to solve a problem, navigate a challenge, evaluate an opportunity, make a decision, reconsider an assumption, broaden your perspective, or simply understand yourself and your life more clearly.

Where to Begin

For those who want to experience the philosophy in practice, the Clarity Sequence™ provides a self-directed starting point.

Through structured questions and editable working documents, you examine the life you’re currently experiencing, explore what genuinely matters to you, and begin identifying the gap between where you are and what you may want to create.

The work is yours. You can revisit it, revise it, and use it again as your life evolves.

For those seeking a deeper developmental experience, Elevate Your Life® extends the work through the broader Modern Consciousness® methodology.

UNDERSTAND MORE CLEARLY. CHOOSE MORE INTENTIONALLY. LIVE MORE CONSCIOUSLY.

Modern Consciousness® isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about developing the capacity to understand yourself more fully, engage with life more thoughtfully, and consciously participate in the life you are creating.
